CL Moore's "Northwest of Earth" and Jirel of Joiry stories were translated into Japanese between 71 and 77. Matsumoto did the illustrations and cover art. This one is from Shambleau, one of the most anthologised "vampire" tales of all time!

Pirate, smuggler and all round rogue NW (and companion in mischief Yarol, a Venusian) are very much like Harlock and Tochiro - given Leiji-san's attention to detail it's obvious he read the stories closely, and I've long suspected they were a big influence given the timing... Winkhttp://fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shambleau

Unlike Harlock, however, NW was always getting into trouble with dangerous alien women...! Though Lafresia wouldn't be out of place in a NWS story...!

Shizuka Namino's attempted seduction is a possible shout-out, and a couple of scenes from the series are VERY reminiscent of a couple of the Moore illustrations; so much so I've long suspected Rin Taro of having a bit of a laugh... Sadly I've nowhere to put the pics!

That's very interesting, thanks for sharing!
If you have the opportunity to upload the pics somewhere (on Pinterest maybe?), I'd be really interested to see more of Matsumoto's illustrations for CL Moores stories Smile

Thanks!
Wow, I have known this art for ages but never took the time to translate the name on the book's edge.... And if I'm not mistaken, it's actually a book by Michael Moorcock Very Happy

Oh yeah, I thought it might have been one of the Moorcock illustrations but I couldn't tell. Found this also...

...the series of books he illustrated included 4 CL Moore's (Which I have) plus a couple by Moorcock and Andre Norton (which I don't, as I'm a huge NW Smith fan (and love all Catherine's work to bits...) Norton - not so much, and the Moorcock isn't a famous one...).

The Moore illos are just fantastic - I love how he captures NW (and Yarol!) plus the deadly alien babes thing is sooo Leiji-san! I stuffed scans of the pics into my Paizo Press Northwest of Earth anthology! Cool
